635CVUS covers as a start in this two carton history research project. One family’s historical correspondence mixed into an old cover collection found in the remains of an old desk in Louisville, Kentucky. Begins with ten or so Confederate covers including two type A1 and two of type A4 pairs. Then moves to just over 100 Civil War patriotic envelopes many in poor condition with a few exceptions. Most of the enclosures are removed from their original envelopes, but are included elsewhere in this extensive holding. Markings on envelopes include advertising corners including “Davis, Deupree & Co. We sell slaves” Richmond, Regimentals (12th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers, Suffolk), Camp Leslie, and Camp Douglas. The bulk of the historical significance is in the papers that the family preserved including, slave letters, ship’s orders and passes, battlefield correspondence, cabinet cards, government war forms, Garrison Equipage reports, and hundreds of hand written letters from 1820-1914. 636CVMainly FDC in 12 large heavy cartons. Owner’s estimate of between 15,000-18,000 items. Includes clean, mostly modern, unaddressed cacheted FDC’s of the last 50 years some in quantity, two cartons of subscription covers, a shoebox or two of old correspondence, and plenty of booklet pane and high value FDCs interspersed. Some is still in Scott order much in the original government packaging. Plenty of value for the FDC merchant with the possibility of finds to be gleaned from a thorough search.Cat. 638CVTwo pizza size boxes containing around 160 “better” covers from a large estate. Highlights include #68 on four different covers one of which is a pair, #9 on cover, a few 1869s plus a hand full of Black Jacks one of which is #73 (certificate) used on a mourning cover, a dozen or so banknote covers, an 1860 ornate valentine, folded letters four of which are free franks by Gideon Wells postmaster of Hartford who became Sec. of Navy during the Civil War. 639CVAn old time holding of well over 60 better, mostly 19th century covers. Fair number of Trans American and Trans Atlantics with many 1851s, 1857s, Banknotes, early commemoratives, etc. You will also come across four Civil war Patriotics, five Confederate States with number’s 1 x2, 5, and a C2 on an early flight. Other noteworthy items are number 11 with a green cancel, number’s 7 or 9 x7, 14, x2, 15, 17 strip of four folded over the edge of the cover, 71 strip of three to Hong Kong, however it too has been folded over the edge of the cover, and finally a # 117. There are several of the same issues on piece not within the cover count but does hold solid catalog value stamp wise. Condition is very mixed, some are in rough shape.
