94CV(U447C) Two cent Chicago surcharge on 2¢ Carmine (U429, die 1) entire. Unused with a four line return corner text reading, “After 5 days, return to THE BRUCE-MACBETH ENGINE CO., 2111 Center st. N. W., CLEVELAND, OHIO. Trivial corner bend in the upper right, a few natural paper bends, a small piece of foreign matter on the front at lower left, 1.5mm inclusion on the reverse flap. The item is accompanied with three pieces of correspondence, a 1920 letter from Philip H. Ward Jr., and two letters dated 1936, from D.D. Berolzheimer and J.M. Barlets Co. respectively. All three questioned how the entire was produced and inquiring if the item might be for sale. PFC #499647 dated 02/28/2012 states, “it is a genuine U447C, UPSS 2743, 2¢ on 2¢ Carmine on white, watermark 19, confirms white paper”. This is the only genuine U447C known to exist. No postal stationery collection or specialized study of the 2¢ surcharges can claim to be complete without this item. A marvelous and outstanding rarity. Any and all genuine inquCat.
