COLLECTIONS & ACCUMULATIONS — Dr. Charles Rothwell Collection

Lots 872-1024 are from the collection of Charles E. Rothwell. Dr. Rothwell built his collection over the past 25 years primarily through purchasing large stocks, advanced country collections and smaller lots with specialty items from auction houses in Chicago, Detroit, and New York. To display his collection he constructed his own pages using country specific specialized catalogs and literature obtained from the APS library. These pages run to 1960 and have the look and feel of a Scott Specialty Album page, but contain spaces for shades, paper and perforation varieties, overprint errors and varieties, etc. as per the specialized catalogs. To help ensure consistency of presentation and to facilitate the incorporation of new material, Dr. Rothwell cut mounts for most spaces, whether or not he had the stamp. Please keep in mind while viewing these lots that empty mounts do not necessarily indicate incomplete sets, as they are commonly placeholders for minor varieties and they do not indicate removal of a stamp as these collections are being offered intact. Dr. Rothwell was a stickler for quality, constantly upgrading the centering, freshness and NH condition of his stamps so NH will be found for many of the best values and even in the 19th century. The result is advanced, nearly all mint, collections of exceptional quality. Dr. Rothwell did not finish making albums for the entire world and there are a few used stamps or faulty items. These exceptions will be by and large denoted in the description.
972*Syria another lot perfect for the collector who wishes to specialize. A lot of interesting stamps in the 1919-1928 period but they are spread thin due to the extensive varieties described in the 1936 Yvert catalog and articles on the Arab Government issues used to make these pages. The subsequent period has many mint sets, some imperfs and about a dozen unlisted souvenir sheets.Cat. Value: S.B. 1,200.00

978*oGreece and areas starts with a nice selection of large Hermes Heads (some are used) and is largely complete thereafter. Numerous overprint errors and varieties, imperfs and imperf between, double impressions, etc. Much of the 20th century is NH. The occupations, Italian issues for Corfu and Ionian Islands and related areas like Epirus and Thrace are also impressive with numerous inverted or double overprints and some valuable unlisted items. 980*Hungary outstanding, advanced collection in two volumes. The early issues are strong and collected by Michel perforation and watermark type. The 20th century nears completion and includes dozens of complete imperf sets. The occupations are extensive and include many rare stamps. Much specialty material throughout. 984*oItaly areas a standard Scott Specialty album containing Italian colonies, related areas and states. The colonies contain many better sets and singles and some interesting specialty items. Trieste is complete and Fiume is well populated. The states require careful examination as Dr. Rothwell had not studied this area and some fakes could well be present. 985*Liechtenstein powerful collection that lacks only some “a” numbers for completion. The 1921 issue has both perfs complete. The 1930 issue has several better perfs including the 2 franc perf 11½ x 10½ (Scott 107a). The Vaduz sheet is NH as are most of the other souvenir and miniature sheets in the lot. 986*oLuxembourg the 19th century is very strong with numerous attractive stamps, some of which are used. It is essentially complete from 1882. Much is NH, even the better sets of the 1930’s like the Intellectuals semipostal set. 994*Romania starts with #3 tied to piece (appears to be genuine but offered “as is”). The 1862-1902 issues appear sparse but holds a lot of value. The regular issues are largely complete from 1903 and include many specialty items like the 1906 exploration set with “S.E.” overprints and better imperf sets of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Volume 2 hold complete semipostals and airmails with lots of miniature sheets and other varieties. The BOB is also valuable and contains many interesting items.Cat. Value: S.B. 2,500.00

995*Russia and areas a nice solid collection in two Scott Specialty albums. The Russia has strong Czarist issues and loads of NH or OG sets from 1929-1969. The BOB is nice, especially the Offices in China and Turkey. Armenia has lots of handstamped overprints and there are good items in each of the other former republics. 1000*oSwitzerland superb, powerful collection with strength from the first issues through the BOB. The cantonals may or may not be genuine. The rayons are mostly used but quite nice. The Strubles are mixed mint and used plus a nice pair on cover. From 1862 onward nearly everything is mint and present. A high percentage is NH. Many varieties, perforations, grilled gum, vending machine, tete beche, gutter pairs, double impressions, etc. This goes well beyond the standard Swiss collection.Cat. Value: S.B. 8,500.00

1003*Yugoslavia and areas begins with nice selections of Montenegro and Serbia to 1920. The Yugoslavia proper is mostly complete and contains a lot of inverted overprints and other specialty items. The BOB contains Talion and German occupation issues for Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, etc. Of special note is the copy of Laibach Michel #7 with inverted watermark (3000 euros in 2006 catalog). 1007*oBrazil superb, powerful collection that has about 95% of the basic stamps plus many errors, varieties and unlisted items. The bulls eyes and 1861 issue are used, but nearly everything else is mint. Many of the difficult watermark regular issues are here. The airmails are valuable and have errors and the rare watermark variety of the 1941 issue (Michel 572Y). The 1930 Luftschiffbau zeppelin issues are nearly complete NH. 1013*Mexico an impressive, valuable lot that contains many unusual items. In addition to the Scott listed material, there is a complete set of 1895 transportation issue black proofs. The revolutionary period has hundreds of overprint errors and varieties. The 1915-1916 pictorial issue has imperf pairs and various proofs. The airmails, officials and other BOB are all very strong.
